Addiction is the compulsive use of drugs or alcohol. It is a chronic, progressive and potentially life threatening disease. Individuals who struggle with compulsive behavior or addiction may also suffer from anxiety or depression. Addiction has the distinct characteristic of having the power to affect all members of the family.

Addiction is often used as a way to escape or numb emotional pain. For the short term the pain is treated but, the distress returns and a dangerous downward spiral begins of increasing doses and more frequent use. There are no determining factors for whether or not one will become an addict.
